New data added to NASHP's hospital cost tool

The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) released an update to its Hospital Cost Tool to include 2022 data and new metrics on hospital labor expenses. As a result, users of this publicly available tool can access data on hospital costs such as operating profit margins, cost to charge ratios, breakeven points, and more for approximately 4,600 hospitals for 2011 through 2022.

As health care expenditures rise with the largest proportion of spending consistently on hospital care, state leaders are seeking assistance to understand and better address these high and rising prices and related costs. The hospital cost tool was developed as part of NASHP’s Center for Health System Costs, which is focused on supporting states to achieve increased affordability to ensure consumers have access to comprehensive, high quality health care.

States that are actively using the Hospital Cost Tool to inform state policymaking efforts include Texas, Indiana, and Rhode Island.

HSCA announces 2024 Board of Directors, names new CEO

The Healthcare Supply Chain Association (HSCA), which represents the nation’s leading healthcare group purchasing organizations (GPOs), announced that Capstone Health Alliance President and CEO Tim Bugg will serve as Chair of HSCA’s Board of Directors, replacing TPC President and CEO Roger Nolan.

HSCA also announced that Shoshana Krilow, Senior Vice President of Vizient; Rob Arreola, Chief Legal Officer of HealthTrust; Mark Phalen, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of TPC; and Dan Kistner, Group Senior Vice President of Provista, have joined the board as new members.

Intermountain Health names new president

Intermountain Health has named Jim Sheets as the president for healthcare operations in Colorado, Montana, Kansas, Wyoming, and New Mexico.

Sheets first joined Intermountain Health in 2007 and brings more than 16 years of Intermountain leadership experience to this role. He spent the last nine months serving as the group president for 10 CommonSpirit Health hospitals in Colorado and Utah.

In his new role with Intermountain, he will report to Chief Operating Officer Nannette Berensen and will officially start January 15. Sheets plans to visit each care site during his first 90 days to meet caregivers in person.

Sheets earned both an MHA and an MBA from the University of Minnesota and a BS in business management from the University of Utah. He is an adjunct professor in the Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah and has served on the Board of Directors for the Utah Hospital Association.

Personalized virtual care

The healthcare industry continues to develop and innovate to meet consumer preferences and needs. The pandemic led to wider access to virtual care services, and technology has enabled new entrants into the healthcare industry to profit.

Mayo Clinic Platform and Techcyte announce strategic collaboration

Mayo Clinic Platform, a collaborative ecosystem for healthcare innovation, and Techcyte, a world leader in AI-based digital pathology, are working together to transform the global practice of pathology through the creation of a digital pathology platform.

The digital pathology platform will pioneer and fundamentally reshape the next generation of pathology services with an open, end-to-end, AI driven solution to advance treatments, enhance efficiency and accuracy, and provide worldwide access to industry-leading pathology services. The platform will enable healthcare organizations worldwide to economically digitize their pathology practices and use innovative technical and AI workflow solutions.

Dr. Amerine will lead more than 1,500 full-time pharmacy professionals in Ohio and Florida, and will report to Donald A. Malone Jr., M.D., Cleveland Clinic Executive Vice President and President of the Northeast Ohio Market.

Mercy acquires SoutheastHEALTH

SoutheastHEALTH has joined Mercy after receiving all necessary third-party regulatory approvals. The first noticeable change for patients and the community of these organizations moving forward together starts this week with the placement of new Mercy signage at locations across southeast Missouri.

The two health care systems signed a definitive agreement in August for SoutheastHEALTH to become a member of the Mercy system strengthening health care delivery across southeast Missouri through increased patient access to high quality care.

Co-workers with SoutheastHEALTH are now Mercy co-workers. Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau is now called Mercy Hospital Southeast, while Southeast Health Center of Stoddard is now Mercy Hospital Stoddard.

Other former SoutheastHEALTH facilities and services have also been renamed, including SoutheastHEALTH Foundation. The foundation is now named Mercy Health Foundation Southeast. All donations to the foundation will continue to remain local, just as they always have been, to support patients in southeast Missouri.

SoutheastHEALTH College of Nursing & Health Sciences also is part of Mercy and will continue to educate the next generation of nurses and allied health professionals. It is keeping its existing name for the time being. Mercy is excited to have such a great educational resource join the system and help continue meeting the needs for exceptional clinicians in the region and across Missouri.
