Premier’s Disaster Preparedness Team talks variant outbreaks, safeguards for supply chain
Amid the reports of the Delta variant causing shutdowns of factories in largely unvaccinated parts of Asia, disrupting supply chains and contributing to rising consumer prices, industry stakeholders are monitoring the latest developments and how they may affect the healthcare supply chain.

The Journal of Healthcare Contracting reached out to Premier Inc.’s Disaster Preparedness Team about questions related to possible disruptions to the U.S. healthcare supply chain.
Is the flu disappearing in kids?
Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control for the provisional death counts for COVID-19 suggests that deaths involving influenza have been at zero since July 2021. However, even in July, there was only one death in the 0-17 age range involving influenza. This year, the CDC has only reported nine deaths related to influenza. Is the flu disappearing from the 0-17 age range altogether?

6 huge benefits of marketing automation in medical manufacturing
Marketing automation software is taking over the medical industry. Medical manufacturing has been behind in adopting marketing automation, but that is starting to change. North Carolina legislature passes bill to amend certificate of need laws
The North Carolina state House passed a bill in late August to modify the state’s certificate-of-need (CON) laws by raising the dollar thresholds on healthcare projects that trigger a review by state regulators. The House approval follows state Senate approval earlier this year and sends the bill to the desk of North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.

The new health system, temporarily named BHSH System, is expected to launch this fall. The combination still requires completion of the regulatory review process.

How the pandemic is putting a relationship-driven industry to the test
The healthcare supply chain is built on the relationships of distributors and sales representatives. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a series of unique challenges for an industry that relies so heavily on networking, relationship-building, and other general face-to-face interactions. Your organization’s ability to be flexible and pivot during times of uncertainty is instrumental to staying relevant in an evolving market.

Recently on a Parcels of Info podcast, Steve Martin, SVP of Supplier Management at NDC, and Jack Moran, Managing Partner at MTMC, discussed the challenges and opportunities of working in a relationship-driven industry during a pandemic.
Nursing shortage caused in part by high pay for traveling nurses
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, higher crisis pay is “exacerbating a chronic shortage of permanent medical staff across the country,” a shortage that existed before the pandemic and isn’t just relegated to nurses.

COVID-19 has radically transformed the job market for healthcare staff. As emergency rooms continue to fill up with sick patients, healthcare workers are feeling the pressure and exhaustion brought on by months of COVID-19 surges and taking care of critically ill patients. Travel-nurse pay has also surged, brought on in part by federal emergency funding to hospitals.
