After extensive planning, the largest single facilities project ever undertaken at The Ohio State University seeks Board of Trustees approval this week.

At 1.9 million-square-feet, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital will enhance leading-edge research, clinical training and world-class patient care.

The hospital will have up to 820 beds in private room settings to elevate patient-centered care, safety and training for the next generation of health care providers.
UPMC's revenue tops $11B in first half of year
UPMC reported higher revenue in the first half of this year than in the same period of 2019, but the Pittsburgh-based health system's operating income declined year over year, according to unaudited financial documents.

  • Operating expenses of $11.1 billion
  • Operating income of $59 million, down $20 million from the same period last year
  • Net loss of $165 million, compared to net income of $372 million a year earlier
COVID-19 'panic buying' adds to already-strained drug supply at US hospitals
As pressure on the supply chain mounted and risk of shortages increased, orders were not fulfilled strategically based on need and whether facilities were located in a pandemic hot-spot or region with rising cases.

Vizient tracks 211 drugs considered essential medications that could threaten patient care if unavailable; 38% of them were found to be in short supply in a May report.
Lifespan and Care New England Move forward with Letter of Intent to Merge
Lifespan and Care New England have moved to the next step in their affiliation process.

The combined system would create a Rhode Island based, nonprofit academic medical center with Brown University. The new system would include seven hospitals offering a full complement of specialty, women’s and children’s, and behavioral health, and visiting nurse services, research, and education. 
Northwell records $329M loss in first half of 2020
Northwell Health, a 19-hospital system based in New Hyde Park, N.Y., ended the first half of 2020 with an operating loss despite a revenue increase year-over-year, according to recently released financial documents. 

  • $6.3 billion revenue
  • Patient revenue dropped 9.7 percent in the first half of the year to $5.1 billion
  • Expenses climbed to $6.6 billion
  • Operating loss of $249.6 million
  • $329 million net loss

Northwell Health estimated that the negative financial hit from the COVID-19 pandemic in the six months ended June 30 was about $1.2 billion and attributed most of the financial impact to lower patient volume.

Through Aug. 28, Northwell has received $1.2 billion in grants from the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security Act. In the six months ended June 30, the health system recorded $754 million of this relief aid as "other operating revenue."
