Desperate lawmakers hunt for medical supplies as Trump takes hands-off approach
Democrats and Republicans across the country say they’re desperately trying to acquire masks, gloves and ventilators for the most at-risk health care workers in their districts — a crisis that, for now, can’t be solved with simply more cash.

The Michigan Republican said he’s been surveying hospitals and health centers in his district about their supply of the masks: “The average right now for N95s is a four-day supply.”

One community health center in the Queens district had to start furloughing their health care workers after the number of staffers testing positive for coronavirus tripled in recent days due to a lack of proper protective equipment.

Republicans and Democrats did agree to include $100 billion in the latest relief package to help shore up supplies for hospitals. Unfortunately those dollars are slow to disperse and hospitals are taking extreme measures like sanitizing masks by baking them in an oven or pleading for donations from other industries like construction or dentistry.
China Concealed Extent of Virus Outbreak, U.S. Intelligence Says
Bloomberg reports that the U.S. intelligence community concluded in a classified report to the White House, according to three U.S. officials, that China concealed the extent of the coronavirus outbreak in its country, under-reporting both total cases and deaths. The unidentified officials said the thrust is China’s public reporting on cases and deaths is intentionally incomplete.
Special Report: The Mask Middlemen - How pop-up brokers seek big paydays in a frenzied market
Brian Kolfage, a Florida military veteran, formed a business called America First Medical, which offers on its website and in social media pitches to broker large-volume sales of high-grade masks known as N95s.

Though he hasn’t yet found buyers, Kolfage says he’s found masks all over the world, including stockpiles hidden away in warehouses in Japan and Eastern Europe.

Kolfage aims to be one of the new mask middlemen. These middlemen described a wild marketplace, in which they seek to quickly connect sellers and buyers before competitors can move in and sell stockpiles out from under them. But the frenzy also has broken down standard quality controls, opening the market to an influx of masks of uncertain origin and effectiveness.

HEALTH CARE BRIEFING: Pelosi Eyes Supply Chain Czar in Next Bill
House Democrats want to make Covid-19 treatments free and plan to mandate the Trump administration create a supply chain czar to oversee the purchase and distribution of medical supplies in their next legislative package.

House Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) said he wants “some kind of clear national leader” for the medical equipment supply chain to oversee the distribution of personal protective equipment for health-care providers. Pallone said that Democrats want language in the bill “mandating or authorizing” to some extend a federal supply chain leader.
